For the individual infant, there are transitions from intra-uterine to extra-uterine life, from early forms of relatedness to more specific object relationships, from the pre-verbal to the verbal self, and many others. Within the family, there are transitions from dyads to triads and to broader family relationships. And there are many other social and cultural transitions of particular importance for infants.
